JEF – Europe heard with sorrow of the tragic end to Bronislaw Geremek’s life yesterday in a car accident. Activist, Solidarnosc leader, Polish Foreign Minister and MEP, Geremek was one of Poland’s most respected statesmen and an emblematic figure of Poland’s fight for democracy.
”Our thoughts at this time are with Geremek’s family.” reacted JEF – Europe President Samuele Pii. ”We present them, and particularly his two sons, with our most heartfelt sympathies. Europe as a whole mourns with them the loss of a great democrat, a man whose unending commitment towards his ideals was substantial in making democracy a reality for millions of Poles.” Pii added.
”I had the honour to talk with him three weeks ago in Lyon at the second edition of the ’États Généraux de l’Europe’, and we were going to work together in projects promoting European democracy. It is with profound bereavement that we will continue to carry out his work for a Europe of the citizens. JEF deplores the loss of an emblematic Federalist and a respected friend. ” Pii also said.
JEF – Europe learned to respect greatly Bronislaw Geremek as it worked with him on several occasions, such as in JEF’s campaign for a European Federal Constitution and for a European Referendum which Geremek backed, or a enlightening lecture (Lecture Altiero Spinelli 2007, ”L’Europe au défi de la démocratie”) given by Geremek at the Centre for Studies on Federalism (Turin, Italy), available in French.
