The federal board of Eurooppanuoret ry has selected climate activist Atte Ahokas, 16, as the Young European of the Year 2019. With this choice, Eurooppanuoret wants to draw attention to young people’s concern about the climate and the urgency of the fight against climate change. Combating climate change must be a priority during Finland’s EU presidency as well as on the agenda of the next European Parliament and Commission.
“Atte’s courageous action is an example of how a single young person can, through their own actions, draw the attention of an entire country to stopping the climate change that threatens Finland, Europe, and the whole world,” says Eurooppanuoret’s Chairperson Iiris Asunmaa.
Atte Ahokas is pleasantly surprised to hear about the award. “It’s wonderful that the fight against climate change is getting attention in this way,” says the 2019 Young European Atte Ahokas. “I encourage all young people to boldly take action to defend our planet.”
The Young European of the Year will be awarded in Helsinki at Narinkkatori on Europe Day, May 9th, at 18:15. Eurooppanuoret will be presenting this traditional award for the 15th time. Eurooppanuoret congratulates Atte and encourages him to continue his important work for the climate!
