On 13 May 2025, it was reported that the government is preparing a decision to change the rail gauge to match the European standard. The decision was criticised as unnecessary and as harmful EU regulation for Finland. JEF Finland wants to point out that changes to rail infrastructure have, in particular, positive effects.
Finland has long used a 1524mm rail gauge, which differs from the European standard. The reason for this lies in Russia’s historical influence and in trade with the east, which required tracks to be built to match Russian infrastructure. The reform would first be seen in the rail network north of Oulu, which is also particularly relevant for the defence alliance NATO. Elsewhere in Europe, the so-called standard gauge (1435mm) is used, which is the most common rail gauge in the world. In 2022, the Commission issued its recommendation for Finland to change its rail gauge. The background at the time included, for example, the changed geopolitical situation.
A nationwide overhaul of the rail network is a slow undertaking, but it has wide-ranging, positive effects on security of supply and defence as well as on the economy. In addition, in terms of tourism, the reform would enable smoother mobility and the integration of Finland into the European Interrail system. The new rail gauge would also allow Finland’s rail network to be integrated more easily with the other Nordic countries’ and, through them, the whole of Europe’s rail network. Increasing rail traffic is also a key part of achieving transport emission reductions, for example by replacing air travel.
