Europe’s security situation has become more tense, and military pressure on its neighbouring regions has increased. JEF Finland demands that the remaining European Union member states join NATO.
“A shared and credible foreign and security policy requires that all EU countries belong to the same defence alliance”, states JEF Finland’s President Risto Rajala.
The EU has a common foreign and security policy line, but no shared resources to counter threats. At the same time, most EU countries are already NATO members, meaning the EU’s defence already relies heavily on the military alliance.
“A clear division of labour and the concentration of resources would create more security. It is neither sensible nor realistic for the EU to build defence structures that duplicate NATO’s” comments Rajala.
The EU was not party to the security negotiations held between the United States and Russia, even though Europe’s security was on the agenda. A clearer EU role within NATO would strengthen the Union’s influence and reduce the risk of defence policy decisions being made over the heads of Europeans. This would also serve Finland’s interests as a neighbour of an increasingly aggressive Russia in its foreign policy.
“Once tensions grow large enough, it is already too late to seek safety in a military alliance. Now is the time to take the necessary steps to guarantee Europe’s security” Rajala concludes.
