JEF Finland supports the reform of the Trans Act

JEF Finland supports the Kuuluu kaikille (‘Belongs to Everyone’) campaign for reforming the Trans Act.

JEF Finland’s Executive Board has decided to support the Kuuluu kaikille (‘Belongs to Everyone’) campaign, which has gathered a broad coalition of political and non-aligned organisations behind it. JEF Finland considers that the current Trans Act violates human rights, bodily integrity and the right to self-determination.

The goal of the Kuuluu kaikille campaign is a Trans Act based on the right to self-determination, in which legal gender recognition is based on self-declaration rather than a medical process, does not require proof of infertility, and is also possible for people under 18. As many as 1.5 million people in Europe do not identify with the gender assigned to them at birth.

“It’s clear to JEF Finland that we support everyone’s human rights and right to self-determination. The campaign has gathered a delightfully broad group of actors behind it, so joining was an easy decision for us,” says JEF Finland President Tuomas Tikkanen.

JEF Finland is a politically non-aligned European organisation, whose activities are guided by the organisation’s values and political programme.

“European cooperation is built on respect for human rights, and so is JEF Finland’s work. Defending European values comes naturally to us,” Tikkanen says.

“Finland has received criticism of its current Trans Act from several international authorities, including the UN Committee against Torture. That is a strong signal, and one that should, if nothing else, finally lead to reform of the Trans Act.”
