A year ago, on Europe Day 2023, a year-long trial began in which EU flag-flying was increased at Government buildings alongside the Finnish flag. The aim of the trial was to visually highlight the sense of unity and shared values between Finland and the European Union.
JEF Finland, together with the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL), the Union of Students in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (SAMOK), and the EU Youth Delegates of the Finnish youth work umbrella organisation Allianssi, demand that the EU flag-flying trial not only be continued, but expanded to cover more public buildings across Finland.
“Flag-flying is not merely a ceremonial gesture — it is also a way to strengthen citizens’ European identity. When we see the EU flag flying alongside the Finnish flag, it reminds us of the community we belong to and the values we support through shared action”, says JEF Finland President Amanda Alvesalo.
Regular use of the EU flag not only highlights the significance of the European community, it also reminds us that the European Union is an integral part of our everyday lives and our future. Finland has been part of the European Union since 1995, and over this time the Union’s influence on our society has been significant. Whatever one’s opinion of the Union, we are part of the EU, and the EU is part of our society.
“Continuing and expanding EU flag-flying is a natural step that supports cooperation and solidarity between Finns and the whole European Union. This is especially important now, as we face global challenges together that require strong cooperation”, says SYL President Akseli Tiitta.
“Every EU flag serves not only as a reminder of our community, but also as a reminder of the opportunity to influence its work. Active engagement in the EU is key to solving the challenges of the future”, comments SAMOK President Lauri Kujala.
“We call on the government and other public bodies to jointly recognise the significance of EU flag-flying and make it a permanent practice at all public buildings. Now is the time to demonstrate our commitment to a more united and stronger Europe”, conclude Allianssi’s EU delegates Emilia Uljas and Eetu Leinonen.
