JEF Finland: Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression must be condemned in the strongest terms – Ukraine must not be left alone

By the decision of authoritarian President Vladimir Putin, Russia has launched full-scale military operations in Ukraine. JEF Finland demands that the European Union and the international community stand together in a united front in support of Ukraine.

“Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine is a huge shock to all of us. This war is Vladimir Putin’s fault alone, and his cronies’, and the deaths it causes are the result of his decisions. The brave Ukrainians who are the target of this senseless invasion and violence deserve our full support”, comments JEF Finland’s President Risto Rajala.

Leaders of the EU member states are meeting this evening at a European Council summit, where they intend to decide on new measures against Russia. JEF Finland calls on the member states to agree at this meeting on sanctions that would collapse the Russian economy and make its military operations as painful as possible for it. Cutting the country off from the international SWIFT payment system and seizing the assets of Russian oligarchs enriched through corruption within EU territory are examples of impactful countermeasures.

“The member states must do what is right. Harsh sanctions are necessary to force Russia back to the negotiating table. Ukraine must be offered defence equipment, military intelligence, and significant economic and humanitarian aid. Ukraine must not be left alone”, Rajala demands.

Political youth organisations are holding a demonstration in support of Ukraine on Saturday 26 February from 12 noon, which JEF Finland members are also warmly welcome to join. The gathering point is Esplanadi Park.
