JEF Finland’s parliamentary election goals for 2023 were published at the Europe Forum on 25 August 2022. As part of the launch, JEF Finland organised a panel discussion titled “The EU budget and global challenges – how do we get the most out of our shared resources?”, featuring former Under-Secretary of State for European Affairs and current Miltton director Jori Arvonen, and Member of the European Parliament Miapetra Kumpula-Natri.
“Finland cannot answer these fundamental questions affecting humanity and the whole planet alone – acting for the common good requires unprecedented European cooperation. It’s time to take effective action to strengthen the European Union’s capacity to act. The best ways to do this are increasing and reforming the EU budget”, comments JEF Finland’s President Risto Rajala.
The Union’s resources are currently too small to meet the expectations placed on the EU. JEF Finland demands that the EU budget be increased from its current level. We expect Finland to acknowledge these facts and pursue a stronger global impact for the Union by increasing the shared budget.
“The EU needs to spend more than it currently does on managing major global developments. Combating climate change and biodiversity loss, adapting to the changed security environment, promoting sustainable digitalisation, increasing global impact, safeguarding fundamental values, and strengthening youth participation are goals the EU must pursue through all of its spending.”, comments Rajala
Why talk about the EU ahead of the parliamentary elections?
The parliamentary elections are also EU elections. Parliament wields significant EU-political power and helps shape the EU’s future. It’s up to Parliament to decide what Finland says with its voice in the EU.
