JEF Finland’s Board has selected Roma activist Leif Hagert as the recipient of the Young European of the Year recognition.
Every year on Europe Day, 9 May, JEF Finland recognises as Young European of the Year a person who courageously promotes European values and takes an active, constructive part in European civic debate.
“Opposing structural discrimination lies at the core of European values. The rights of minorities, and of Roma people in particular, are a pressing concern and a matter of debate not only in Finland but more broadly across Europe. We are delighted by Leif’s courageous and constructive approach to activism, and with this recognition we want to thank him for his outstanding and important work,” comments JEF Finland President Risto Rajala.
Leif Hagert is a 32-year-old Helsinki-based freelancer, activist and columnist. Leif enjoys urban culture and deep conversations with friends.
“I am extremely touched by this recognition, it warms the heart and encourages me to keep going. This recognition shows that Roma issues are finally starting to receive the attention they urgently need. I share this recognition with previous generations and with elderly Roma who are still alive, who have not received recognition for their own work and for surviving under difficult circumstances. May this recognition encourage everyone to rise together against structural racism and anti-Roma sentiment – let’s make Europe better together,” says the new Young European of the Year.
