Nicolas Koivisto and Oona Vehmas have been chosen as editors-in-chief of Tähdistö, JEF Finland’s expert and organisational media outlet, for the 2025 term.
The selection was made at Executive Board meeting 24/2024. Three applications were received by the application deadline.
Nicolas Koivisto is in his second year studying political science at Sciences Po in France.
’’My studies focus broadly on the European Union, and my goal after graduating is to work at the Commission’’, Koivisto says. As a young person studying abroad, he wanted to be more involved with Finnish organisations, so last summer he decided to start writing for Tähdistö. Within the EU, Koivisto is particularly interested in economics and governance, especially the development of shared European challenges such as economic growth. In his free time, Koivisto enjoys hiking, both in nature and in cities.
Oona Vehmas is finishing her master’s thesis at the University of Turku, majoring in political science. She served on the JEF Turku board in 2022 as Events, Communications and Equality Officer, and in 2023 as Vice President responsible for political activity and communications. In addition to her organisational work, Vehmas has built diverse expertise, particularly in communications and political roles. She has worked at the Finnish Red Cross, the University of Turku and the Prime Minister’s Office. Vehmas says she also enjoys following and analysing politics, as well as writing, in her free time.
The editor duo already have concrete goals in mind for the coming year. ’’As editor-in-chief, I want to encourage young Finns to seek work at the EU, since there is a shortage of Finns there’’, Koivisto says.
’’Tähdistö has an important role to play in providing timely and genuinely in-depth EU journalism, and next year the goal is to raise its visibility even further. It’s also shaping up to be a particularly exciting year for the EU, as the new Commission’s work gets properly underway’’, comments Vehmas.
