JEF Finland wants to make combating climate change a top priority in Finland’s EU policy. According to a survey commissioned by JEF Finland from Taloustutkimus, 76 percent of young Finns want increased EU-level cooperation specifically in the fight against climate change.
“Combating climate change is something that must be influenced at EU level, since the Union, thanks to its size, has the capacity needed to do so. Only together can we bring about real change”, states JEF Finland President Iiris Asunmaa.
JEF Finland’s government programme objectives set out several means to combat climate change. Impact across the whole Union can be achieved, for example, by phasing out environmentally harmful corporate subsidies both at EU level and in the member states, and by directing significant EU-level investment towards, for instance, increasing clean energy production, reducing transport emissions, and promoting the circular economy.
“Combating climate change must be a cross-cutting theme running through everything the EU does. For example, agricultural subsidies must finally be reformed in a more environmentally friendly direction by ending subsidies for environmentally harmful forms of food production”, sums up Asunmaa.
JEF Finland also wants climate to be the main theme of Finland’s EU Presidency, which begins in July. Climate change is the greatest problem of our time, and Finland, as part of the European Union, has strong prerequisites to be part of the solution.
“Young people’s concern about the climate is real. Young people’s trust in Finnish society and in the future depends on how seriously this concern is taken. Finland must take on a role in fighting climate change in the EU that is bigger than its size”, demands Asunmaa.
