JEF Finland: The EU’s Global Role Must Be Strengthened

JEF Finland wants to highlight the great importance of the European Union’s global role. The EU is Finland’s most important and influential reference group, and strengthening its global capacity to act is unambiguously in Finland’s interest.

“Thanks to its size and economic clout, the EU gives its member states the chance to punch above their weight in international politics. This must be remembered in the government formation talks too”, states JEF Finland President Iiris Asunmaa.

In its government programme objectives, JEF Finland has listed ways to strengthen the EU’s global role. A common foreign policy, trade policy, and a leading role in international climate action feature prominently among the objectives.

“The EU’s common foreign policy should be strengthened by working to increase the use of qualified majority voting. The functioning of trade policy must be safeguarded so that the Union can continue to defend and develop the rules-based system of global trade, both bilaterally and multilaterally. It must also be ensured that the EU acts as a global frontrunner in complying with the Paris Climate Agreement”, states Asunmaa.

JEF Finland points out that the EU has excellent prerequisites to be part of the solution to the most significant global problems. However, this requires that the Union receives sufficient political support from its member states. Finland must do everything in its power to ensure these prerequisites are met.

“The EU gives us the opportunity to change the world. But the Union needs new tools to do so. Finland must be at the forefront of developing and strengthening the EU’s global capacity to act”, demands Asunmaa.
